Concrete Driveways in Brookline, MA

Build a Driveway That Lasts Decades, Not Years

Massachusetts weather is tough on driveways. Driveway weight, oil leaks, freeze-thaw, plowing in winter and heat in summer. Brookline Concrete Services builds driveways made with strong enough concrete for all of this abuse to last a long time and look great.

I have installed many new driveways and replaced many old ones in Brookline. I have found out what goes wrong with the bad ones; they either have a poorly prepared base, are too thin, lack adequate reinforcement, or were put together by a contractor who was in a rush. We do it differently here at Brookline Concrete Services. Our concrete driveway installers use proven techniques that result in driveways that are both strong and aesthetically pleasing.

What Makes a Quality Concrete Driveway?

Concrete driveways are far more complex than simply pouring the concrete itself. They include a proper excavation (of unsuitable materials), properly compacted base materials, adequate thickness, reinforcing elements, and finishing.

We first remove unsuitable base material, create a solid base, and then compact the sub-grade to establish a solid foundation. We laid down multiple gravel base layers. We build our forms at the correct grade for proper water run-off. Depending upon the specifications for your driveway, we will either install wire mesh or rebar as the reinforcement. Finally, we pour high-quality concrete, finish it in accordance with standard practices, and allow sufficient time for curing before allowing you to use your new driveway.

The above-mentioned method takes much longer and costs much more than alternative methods of constructing a driveway. However, the resulting concrete driveway system will last at least 30 years without failure, whereas the alternative methods will fail after only 10 years.

Concrete Driveway Design Ideas

You don’t have to settle for the standard gray broom-finished driveway. We have several different ways to design your driveway:

Broom Finished Standard (Non-Slip): A classic finish that is durable, easy to clean, and non-slip. This option is best suited for those looking for a functional design and do not wish to add decorative elements to their driveway.

Exposed Aggregate: This process involves seeding the surface of the concrete with decorative stone and washing away the top layer of cement to expose the stone. This creates an interesting texture on the surface, can help hide small blemishes in the concrete, and provides a slip-resistant surface. The combination of functionality and aesthetics is what makes our exposed aggregate work so appealing.

Stained / Colored Concrete: Stain can be added as an integral color within the concrete or applied to the surface of the concrete after it has been poured as a stain. Either way, this adds color and interest to your driveway while still providing the same durability as regular concrete.

Stamped Patterns (Brick, Cobblestone, Slate, etc.): Your concrete can be “stamped” to resemble other materials such as brick, cobblestone, or slate. Providing a high-end appearance similar to pavers, but at a lower price point and with less maintenance than pavers.

Decorative Border Options: Borders or accent bands can be placed around the perimeter of the driveway to create a frame or accentuate the driveway by using contrasting colors to enhance curb appeal.

We will assist you in selecting a design that suits your home’s style and budget.

Our Concrete Driveway Installation Process

Here’s how we build driveways that last:

Site Prep: We remove the topsoil & any other poor materials as well as level off to provide good drainage away from your home.

Base: We lay down and compact layers of gravel base material. The base is where all the settling and cracking will occur, so this is the most important part of a successful driveway.

Forms: We set up the forms to create even edges and determine the thickness. We also ensure there is enough of a slope for water to run off.

Rebar/Wire Mesh: We install either wire mesh or rebar as per engineering specifications to help prevent cracking and increase the strength of the concrete.

Concrete: We pour a high-quality concrete mix specifically designed for driveway construction. We make sure to do it right by consolidating the fresh concrete to prevent air pockets/voids.

Finish: We screed, float, and then finish the surface to your desired texture. It is crucial to complete finishing at the right time; if you do it too soon or too late, you could cause issues with the finished product.

Cure: We protect the new concrete and ensure the moisture content is optimal for the critical cure stage. How long and under what conditions the concrete cures directly correlates to the final strength of your driveway.

Seal: Once the concrete has cured sufficiently (depending on temperature, etc.), we seal the driveway to protect it from moisture penetration, staining, and freeze/thaw damage.

Concrete Driveway Slabs: Built for Your Load Requirements

Concrete driveway slab thickness is engineered based on your needs. Specific driveway thickness requirements are based on the types of vehicles parked in the area (cars, trucks/RVs). Our engineers assess the requirements and design a concrete driveway that meets those specifications.

For residential use, a typical driveway requires a 4-inch-thick slab to accommodate average-sized cars. The thicker slab (typically 5 to 6 inches), which is used to support heavier vehicle weight (such as work trucks, RVs, and/or boats with trailers), will have additional reinforcement to support anticipated loads.

Concrete Driveway Overlay: Refresh Without Full Replacement

You may be able to use an overlay for a new top layer on your driveway if it appears to have some wear and tear; however, the structural integrity remains good. The process involves pouring a new layer of concrete over your old driveway so that you get a clean, fresh look at a lower price point than removing and replacing the entire driveway.

An overlay works best for driveways where there is minimal surface damage to the existing concrete (smaller cracks or minor surface erosion), but there are no serious structural problems with the existing driveway; i.e., no extreme settling or very large cracks with vertical movement.
